BROWNSBURG, Ind. (November 8, 2021) – If one thing is for certain, you can never count out Donny Schatz, no matter the circumstance.
The ten-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion certainly lived up to that expression during the recent weekend, capping the 2021 World of Outlaws World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte with two, big charges including a 22-spot rally on Saturday, November 6.
Forced to utilize a Series provisional, Schatz started 25th on Saturday’s A-Main grid and put on a clinic, climbing through most of the field before finishing third behind Brock Zearfoss and eventual winner, Brent Marks. It was the bottom groove that served as Schatz’ battleground, nearly making the pass for second before settling for the final spot on the podium. In addition, Schatz was awarded the evening’s Hard Charger Award.
“That’s what is expected of me,” Schatz said, driver of the Carquest Auto Parts/Curb Records/Ford Performance/Sage Fruit/Digital Ally/Advance Auto Parts/Rush Truck Centers/Absolute Automation and Security/Hunt Brothers Pizza/TicketSmarter/J&J Auto Racing/No. 15 sprint car . “We found ourselves in every bad position and we just didn’t change enough stuff. We finally did and we changed everything except the seat, steering wheel, and driver. I’m glad we got a respectable finish to end the year.”
One night prior, Schatz performed a near-similar feat, ending the first World Finals main event with a stout run from 11th to finish fifth. Like Saturday, Schatz’ preferred groove was the bottom, forced to battle with Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing teammate, Kerry Madsen, along the way.
When the weekend dust settled, Schatz found himself fourth in the final World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series driver standings, a mere-two points shy of third. Three victories padded Schatz’ battle in the standings, earning wins at Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway, Red River Valley Speedway, and I-80 Speedway. Impressive enough, Schatz concluded the year with 62 top-ten finishes in 77 World of Outlaws feature starts, 47 of which within the top five.
