BROWNSBURG, Ind. (July 19, 2021) – It was a long week in the Buckeye State for Fargo, North Dakota’s Donny Schatz, as the ten-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion participated in five major programs across six days, two of which – on behalf of Mother Nature’s inability to cooperate – contested on the same day. In all, Schatz, driver of the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing/Carquest Auto Parts/Curb Records/Ford Performance/Sage Fruit/Digital Ally/Advance Auto Parts/Rush Truck Centers/Absolute Automation and Security/Hunt Brothers Pizza/J&J Auto Racing/No. 15 sprint car, left Ohio with a trio of top-ten finishes; a perfect momentum kick for a long stretch of big money races in July and August.
Schatz kicked-off his Ohio stretch with a top-five outcome in the annual Brad Doty Classic at Attica Raceway Park on Tuesday, July 13th. Forced to do things the hard way, Schatz’ eventual top-five performance was the product of row 11, eventually climbing 18 spots to finish fourth after starting 22nd on the feature grid, simultaneously solidifying the evening’s Hard Charger Award. A sixth-place finish during heat race competition forced Schatz to participate in the evening’s Last Chance Showdown. Schatz would ultimately transfer, resulting in his eleventh-row A-Main starting position.
As mentioned, Mother Nature put a twist in Eldora Speedway’s double Kings Royals schedule forcing Schatz and Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing to compete in a pair of $175,000-to-win main events in a single day. Originally slated to be contested on Thursday, July 15, and Saturday, July 17, the 38th Annual Kings Royal and the 37th Annual Kings Royal were contested on Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening, respectively. Despite his attempt on Saturday evening resulting in an 18th-place score, Schatz’ performance during Saturday afternoon’s 38th Annual Kings Royal ended seventh in the running order, earning his way into the big dance by way of heat race victory.
The $10,000-to-win Jokers Wild, the 38th Annual Kings Royal preliminary program, was contested on Wednesday, July 14, as originally scheduled, but the $12,000-to-win Knight Before The Kings Royal, the 37th Annual Kings Royal preliminary program, was moved to Sunday, also due to Mother Nature. Schatz would go on to finish 13th and fifth, respectively, highlighting the preliminary events with a three-spot jump on Sunday.
The “Month of Money” for the Greatest Show On Dirt will continue on Tuesday evening, July 20, with the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pennsylvania. The midweek program will award a $25,000 top prize; Schatz is the defending Silver Cup champion, as well as the owner of seven Silver Cup titles since accomplishing his first in 2006.
Williams Grove Speedway’s annual Summer Nationals will take over headlines on Friday and Saturday, July 23-24. The champion will receive a $20,000 payday.
