BROWNSBURG, Ind. (May 11, 2020) – Despite a lengthy delay due to ongoing social distancing restrictions as the result of the COVID-19 pandemic, ten-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion Donny Schatz finally resumed his 2020 campaign and joined the Greatest Show On Dirt for the WoO Invitational at Knoxville Raceway on Friday, May 8.
Schatz’ return to the cockpit of the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing/Advance Professional/Carquest Auto Parts/Technet Professional Automotive Service/Ford Performance/Mobil 1/Sage Fruit/Curb Records/No. 15 sprint car proved successful, concluding his visit to the Sprint Car Capital of the World with a sixth-place run after starting tenth on the feature grid.
Impressive enough, Schatz’ eventual top-ten outcome, his fourth consecutive during World of Outlaws competition this season, was the product of perseverance, eventually forced to rally from the outside of row four to finish third during heat race competition. Schatz’ position on the heat race grid was the result of his 15th-fastest time during his respective group of qualifying time trials.
There were 48 entries on hand for the World of Outlaws Invitational.
“It feels good to be back in a sprint car,” Donny Schatz said, who owns one World of Outlaws victory thus far in 2020. “It was a solid team effort on Friday night. We kinda had to dig ourselves out of a hole in our heat race, but luckily for me, I work with the best team in racing and they provided me with a car capable of doing the job. We had a lot of downtime over the last few months, but the guys came out with a lot of confidence and motivation and I’m proud of them. Hopefully we can keep this going and get back to victory lane.”
Donny Schatz and Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing will not resume World of Outlaws competition until the Series visits Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Missouri, on Friday and Saturday, May 22-23. The two-day program will award a total winner’s share equalling $16,000; $6,000 during Friday’s preliminary and $10,000 during Saturday’s finale.
Schatz is a former World of Outlaws winner on the highbanks of I-55, most recently scoring the Prelude to the Ironman victory in 2015.
